Knife country

Czech:

Kromě oprav a broušení poškozených nožů, pil a nůžek nabízeli své v zimě vyrobené zboží.

English:

The poor soil around Mikulášovice did not yield so easy a living as the fertile land of the Bohemian interior and what produce the rocky fields did bear hardly covered the needs of the families toiling there. This reality drove the local populace to find a living elsewhere. As early as the 17th century Mikulášovice’s itinerant knife grinders, wandering with tools and grinding stones on their backs from town to town, were a frequent sight on the highways and byways of Bohemia and Saxony. Aside from repairing and sharpening knives, saws, and scissors, they offered for sale items that they had made the previous winter.
